Tori Lines for Trawling
Tori lines scare seabirds away from baited hooks or from dangerous cables.
They are a set of streamers hanging off a line in the air above the fishing line or, in the case of trawlers, above the cables that attach the net to the boat.
Tori lines are used when fishing gear is being set or hauled in, because this is when seabirds are attracted into the risky zone.
In windy conditions, an outrigger or extra lines may be necessary to make sure the streamers are directly over the fishing line or cables. Skippers use a variety of objects on the seaward end of the tori line to create drag so the line doesn't sag.
